Are You Ready To Make 2014 The Year Of Leadership Accountability?

2014 Year of Leadership Accountability

WEEKLY GUT CHECK

If you are familiar with my blogs you know I write and speak a lot about leadership accountability. It’s a core theme of my book The Leadership Contract. And it is a key topic of conversation with every senior leader I encounter, regardless of industry or sector. In fact, I’ve surveyed many organizations across North America and close to 90% strongly agree that leadership accountability is a critical business issue for them.

Why? Frankly, there is a huge leadership accountability gap in the business world. If we’re being honest with ourselves, I think we can agree we all need to be stronger individually and collectively as leaders.

This is why I’m proclaiming 2014 as the Year of Leadership Accountability.

It’s a personal challenge to all of us – whether you are a C-Suite executive, a middle manager or frontline supervisor – we need to step up and live up to the challenges of being a true leader.

Ah, but how and where do we start our bid to boost leadership accountability?

If you haven’t done so already, take some time to conduct what I refer to as your own personal leadership retreat.  Carve out some space in your calendar to reflect on your leadership role.  Here are some questions to guide your thinking:

1)   What challenges and opportunities will my company face this year, and in what specific ways will I need to step up as a leader?

2)   In what direction do I need to evolve the culture of my organization, department or team in 2014?

3)   How will I set things in motion to establish a broader sense of leadership accountability among other leaders across my organization?

4)   What key relationships (personally or professionally) will need to be reinforced to help me succeed as a leader this year?

5)   Finally, how will you crystalize your leadership accountability in a simple set of powerful words?

This last idea is inspired by Chris Brogan, one of the world’s leading social media marketing experts. Every year, Brogan identifies three words that serve as the central focus for his goals and efforts throughout the year.  I’d like to modify his idea a bit for you:  what three words can you identify to bring focus to your leadership role in 2014? Check out Chris’ blog for his insights.

Let me know how you do with this week’s leadership gut check.  I’ll share my own responses next week.

Happy New Year to all and I wish you all the best in 2014 – the Year of Leadership Accountability.
