Hello Vince and others…although this situation with Armstrong is a fairly extreme example of a leader losing it in public there are probably many many many situations happening as we speak of leaders ‘losing it’. Whether they know it or not they suffer the same loss of credibiility with the people that witness their meltdowns that Armstrong did. Employees who see leaders lose their cool question the leader’s maturity, professionalism, judgement, control, authority and lose respect for the leader. In some cases, leadership credibility that took years to build can be detroyed in a momentary emotional reaction. Leaders need to set themselves and the other leaders that work for them a goal of ‘zero tolerance’ for losing it.
